Veryl Anne (Hoile) Franke went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 16, 2025.  Veryl was born on September 29, 1936, and was the youngest of eleven children born to Raymond and Elsie (Hutchins) Hoile. Veryl attended grade school at Hoile Country School until moving to the “big city” high school in Mauston.  Following her graduation in 1954, Veryl began working at East Side Grocery for Harvey Janechek.

On October 6, 1956, Veryl married longtime family friend and area farmer Arnold (Pat) Franke. For the first three years of their marriage, Pat and Veryl rented a farm from Dick Walsh on Shelton Road in rural Mauston.  In 1959, they bought their own farm near Lyndon Station and raised beef, pigs, chickens, and crops, as well as milked cows until retiring in 1998.  Known as Lyndon’s ‘King and Queen’ of sweet corn, Pat and Veryl continued to raise acres of sweet corn and other garden produce well into their retirement. Veryl could be found in her flower beds as she coaxed beautiful blooms from peonies, dahlias and gladiolus, and she was always happy to do a ‘weed walk’ to offer gardening advice to her friends and daughters.

Veryl had a talent for sewing, quilting, making crafts, and canning.  She made many pairs of pajama pants, outfits and quilts for her children and grandchildren over the years.  She also was an active member of the Sevenweir Homemakers Club for over 50 years.  Veryl was an avid reader and was often reading a book while Pat spent the winters completing puzzles. Even as her vision dimmed in her later years, Veryl still enjoyed listening to books on tape.

Veryl was a member of the V.F.W. Post #5970 Women’s Auxiliary in Lyndon Station. In retirement, Pat and Veryl also spent many years as volunteer drivers for the Meals on Wheels program in Lyndon Station. While at the meal site, Veryl enjoyed a good coffee klutch with the Lyndon crowd, and was often found playing rummy cube and dominoes with her friends.

Veryl is survived by her daughters; Sandy (Kerry) Kjome and Karen (John) Mead, her brother, John Hoile, her grandchildren; Ryan Kjome (Brittany Signorelli), Katie (Jason) Mead Nuttall, Kelsey (Jarod) Kjome Prescott, Alex (Breann) Kjome and her great-grandchildren, Adeline and Ellis Nuttall; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Veryl was welcomed into her Heavenly home by her husband, Arnold (Pat) Franke, her parents, brothers Cecil (Stella) Hoile, Kenneth Hoile; sisters Eleanor (Ben) Bowman, Evelyn (William) Bogert, Mary (Earl) Hobart, Mildred (Kenneth) Robinson, Emma Hoile, Leila (Duane) Manglos and Jessie Hoile; brother-in-law, Otis Franke, and sisters-in-law, Janet Franke and Ruth (Darrell) Franke.

To celebrate Veryl’s life, friends and family are invited to attend a visitation on Saturday, January 25 from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the Bible Baptist Church, 148 Grayside Avenue, Mauston.  A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am with Pastor Peter Bergeson officiating.

A special thank you to the staff at Fairview Nursing Home for the kind and compassionate care Veryl received the past two years.
