Royall Slips By Mauston as Massey Closes in On Scoring Record

The Royall Boys Basketball team was able to fend off the Mauston Golden Eagles 59-56 in an all Juneau County showdown.  Mauston had early leads they could not hold and then faced a 9 point deficit late in the game.  Two big three point buckets by Jasper Walsh cut the Royall lead to 3 but that is as close as Mauston would get.  Mauston was led by Brock Massey who finished with a game high 28 points.  Massey is now 18 points away from tying the Mauston Boys all-time points record held by Tarren Hall and 21 points away from tying Andrea Thomas’s school record for points in a career.  Royall was led by Carter Uppena who finished with a team high 17points, Ben Crneckiy added 9points for the Panthers who improve to 5-1 on their season and will travel to New Lisbon on Thursday.  You can listen to that game on NOW92oneFM and wrjc.com.  Mauston drops to 2-4 and will host Portage on Monday.  A game you can hear live on SmashCountry92.9FM and WRJC.com.

Mauston got a little more resistance from the Onalaska Co-op winning just 63-18.  Espyn Pitts and Sweers each had pins for Mauston in the victory.  Mauston improves to 6-0 on the season with the trio of victories.

Massey’s Return Powers Mauston by Necedah in Boys Basketball

The Mauston Golden Eagles Boys Basketball team returned Brock Massey to their lineup Tuesday night and took off as a team blowing by Necedah 66-26.  Massey finished with a game high 33 points including 19 second half points.  Necedah took an early 6-2 lead of a pair of tough 3 pointers by Jack Herried who finished with a team high 12points for the Cardinals. Mauston would use their size and athleticism to grab a lead they would never relinquish.  Keenan Smith and Cody Komisky each had 9points for the Golden Eagles to compliment Massey.  Mauston improves to 1-1 on the year and will travel to Sparta on Friday.  Necedah will host Weston Thursday night and drops to 0-1 on the season.

” Our sectional had a very fast and deep talent pool. with two teams ranked in the top six boys D-2 teams in the state ( West Salem ranked 2nd and DMP ranked 6th) so we knew the race was really going to be a challenge for our ” bests’ to do what they could do..Our kids really responded to the challenge – we had five lifetime bests on the boys team.  We compete with the “all you can do is all you can do” philosophy and that is exactly  what they did at sectionals. sectionals is always an emotional roller coaster. At the end of the day there are some smiles and some tears..The smiles are good and the tears are good because each of them has experienced  what it means to give your best possible and what happens- happens . We are so proud of our teams” commented MHS CC coaches Bill DeVoe and John Maki

The MHS girls team raced to a 10th place finish at the sectional meet, MHS senior, Morgan Firlus was the top finisher for the girls team with her16th place finish.  Morgan’s time of 21:21 was a lifetime best performance..       ” The state championships are always pretty incredible- they start out fast and keep getting faster.  Josh raced at the state meet last year so he has an understanding of the race management needed  for his best to do what it can do..It will be another week of training -race prep and some fun..” commented Coach Maki.
